What it is

Jargon is a start-up veteran recruitment tool that connects veteran talent to organizations through machine learning and predictive analytics.

What Jargon Offers

AI tool for recruiters and veterans to successfully translate military specific terms and skills in their resume into civilian jobs.

Audience

Jargon offers two platforms to address both sides of veteran recruiting: Enterprise and Veteran. This project will focus on the recruiter’s side of the user journey.

THE CHALLENGE

Job Translation (Veterans: 63% of veterans struggle finding jobs that match their skills in the military, 62% veterans struggle translating their military skills to a civilian job, 67% of veterans face challenges getting job that is same level as where they were in the military
Job Retention: Veterans leave their first civilian job post-military at a higher rate than nonveterans.
Hiring Managers: 72% of hiring managers say they also find it at least somewhat difficult to ascertain recent veterans' skill set suitability just from their resume alone.

Job Matching

There is a clear disconnect between veterans' expectations for post-military life and the reality they meet.

Need for Translation

Highlighting individual achievements is better than simply listing job titles and duty assignments, which often don't translate easily to a non-military audience.

The screening and sourcing process is the most time consuming because of lack of resources or need to do tasks manually (opportunity area for tool to provide ease of use, efficiency, and control)

When to use the tool

The inclusion of the veteran translation tool would be beneficial for the beginning of the process, especially for recruiters.

Military Terms

Most people don’t have a lot of experience hiring veterans or have knowledge about terms, which highlights the need for a veteran translation option for civilian jobs.

Soft Skills vs Technical

Importance of softs skills (communication and collaboration) over just technical skills in determining whether it will be a good match between company culture and candidate.

DEI Goals

DEI is major goal but harder to reach with less obvious minority groups like veterans

GOALS

Clearer Organization

Being able to organize all the skills and abilities of the veteran candidate in a straightfoward, clear way to expediate the recruitment process and make it more effective for both recruiters and candidates to see translated skills

Wider Audience

While this tool is mainly targeted towards recruiters and veterans, ideally it can inform and become useful for anyone striving for more diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace.

Automatic & Transferable

Jargon's automated system can create non time-consuming ways for recruiters to screen through their candidates. The goals is for Jargon to work as a stand alone tool but also have the ability to easily switch between other tools (data transfer)

Original Prototype (Demo)

Manual Input: The recruiter will have to input job position/military role and the related description to compare to other positions or analyze military job.

Output: Jargon generates list of different skills and abilities that the user can select, but there is no visual hierarchy so it is difficult to filter through all the descriptions efficiently.

My Prototype

Automated Process: Jargon automatically detects if the candidate is a veteran based on the resume and prompts the user to run Jargon, creating less work for the recruiter.

Organized Summary of Skills: Instead of showing all the relevant skills of the veteran, the summary view shows a more quick scan of skills based on their previous positions.

Information Clarity

I got feedback to pay attention to establishing clarity in what information is being presented especially for new users who are unfamiliar with the Jargon tool, and addressing any confusions with what the functions are.

Summary View vs Detailed Report

I created two different views for the user: a summary view for a quick scan of the candidate and a more detailed view that compares and analyzes individual roles/ traits/ skills. I got feedback that there should be a clear distinction between the two reports to show the different purposes and be able to quickly switch between the two.
